Carpet cleaner not spraying water? It is usually the tank, not the pump. Seven checks in order, from ten seconds to ten minutes, plus the hard water fix.
You pull the trigger and nothing happens. The motor runs, the brush spins, and the carpet under the head stays completely dry. Or you get a short spurt, a dribble, and then nothing at all.
It is tempting to assume the pump has died. It usually has not. The spray side of a carpet cleaner is a short chain of simple parts, and the one that failed is most often the one somebody touched last: the tank.
Work through this in order and most machines are spraying again within ten minutes, without a tool more complicated than a sewing needle.
The short version
Clean solution travels from the tank, through a valve in the tank's cap or base, along a supply line to a small pump, through a valve the trigger opens, and out of the spray jets. A break anywhere in that chain stops the spray while everything else keeps working.
Check these in order, cheapest and most likely first:
- The clean tank is not seated, so its valve never opens
- The tank cannot let air in, so the flow stops after a few seconds
- The machine is set to spray through the hose instead of the floor head
- The spray jets are blocked with scale or dried detergent
- The pump has lost its prime and is pushing air
- A screen, line or connection inside is blocked or kinked
- The trigger, its wiring or the pump itself has failed
Only the last one needs a repair. The other six are fixed at the kitchen sink.
First, listen for the pump
Before you take anything apart, this one test tells you which half of the machine to look at.
Fill the clean tank, seat it, switch the machine on and pull the trigger in a quiet room. On most uprights you will hear a small electric pump start up, a low hum or buzz that is separate from the vacuum motor, and it stops the moment you let go.
If you hear it, the electrical side is fine. The pump is running and something between the tank and the jets is stopping the water. That is causes one to six below, and it is good news.
If you hear nothing, the pump is not being told to run, or it cannot. That points toward the trigger, the wiring in the handle, or the pump, which is cause seven.
One caveat. Some budget and older machines have no pump at all and let the solution fall to the jets by gravity. If yours is one of them, there is nothing to hear, and the checks come down to the tank valve, the air vent and the jets.
A carpet cleaner that will not spray is usually fine. What failed was the last thing somebody did to the tank.
1. The clean tank is not seated
Most clean tanks have a spring-loaded valve in the cap or the base. It stays shut while you carry the tank to the sink, which is why the tank does not empty itself down your leg. When the tank drops into the machine, a small post pushes the valve open and the solution can flow.
If the tank is sitting even slightly crooked, the post misses the valve and nothing comes out. The machine gives no warning. It simply sprays air.
Lift the tank out and put it back deliberately, level, until it drops fully into its cradle. Then look at the cap. On machines where the valve lives in a screw-on cap, a cap put on at an angle can cross-thread and hold the valve at the wrong height. Unscrew it, check the rubber seal is sitting flat, and screw it back on straight.

2. The tank cannot breathe
This is the one that confuses people, because the machine sprays normally for a few seconds and then stops.
Water can only leave a tank if air comes in to replace it. Every clean tank has a small vent for that. If the vent is blocked, usually by dried detergent, or sealed off because the cap has been screwed down too hard, the flow creates a partial vacuum inside the tank and the water stops moving. You have seen the same thing with a sealed water bottle that glugs and then will not pour.
The test is quick. With the machine spraying poorly, loosen the tank cap a quarter turn and pull the trigger again. If the spray comes back, it was the vent. Find it on the cap or tank shoulder, rinse it under warm running water, and clear it with a pin if it is crusted.
3. The machine is set to the hose
Many uprights can send solution either to the floor head or to the handheld tool, and they switch between the two with a dial or a lever usually labeled for floor and tools. Leave it on tools and the hand tool sprays perfectly while the floor head stays dry.
It is an easy thing to miss, especially if the last job was the stairs or a car seat. Check the selector first on any machine that has one, because it takes two seconds and it catches a surprising number of people who were about to order a new pump.
4. The jets are blocked
The spray jets are tiny openings, and they narrow over time with two things: mineral scale from hard water and dried detergent from leftover solution. A partly blocked jet sprays unevenly, which shows up on the carpet as stripes. A fully blocked set sprays nothing.
Look at the jets on the underside or front of the floor head, and on the hand tool if it has its own. White crust around the openings is scale. A gummy, glossy film is detergent.
To clear them:
- Empty and rinse the clean tank.
- Fill it with warm water and one cup of white vinegar per gallon.
- Spray until the vinegar solution is running through, then stop and let it sit in the lines for ten minutes.
- Spray the rest of the tank through into a bucket or a spare towel.
- Clear any jet that is still blocked with a fine sewing needle pushed gently straight in. Do not widen the hole, and do not use a paperclip or anything that can scratch, because a damaged jet sprays a fan that is worse than a blocked one.
- Flush a full tank of plain water through afterward so no vinegar sits in the machine.
Check your manual before using vinegar. Most machines tolerate it well, but a few manufacturers specify their own descaler.
If you live in a hard water area, this is the cause most owners never find. Scale does not only build up at the jets where you can see it. It also forms inside the pump and the trigger valve, gradually, until the spray has faded to a dribble so slowly that nobody notices it happening. 5. The pump has lost its prime
Small pumps are good at moving water and poor at moving air. If the machine has been stored for months, or you ran the clean tank dry mid-job, the pump and the line can fill with air. The pump then hums away quite happily, pushing nothing.
To prime it, fill the clean tank, seat it properly, and hold the trigger down for 30 to 60 seconds with the floor head over a towel. You will often hear the note of the pump change as water reaches it, and then the spray arrives in a rush. Some manuals describe priming through the hand tool instead, holding it lower than the machine, which lets gravity help.
What not to do is keep running a pump dry for minutes at a time. With no water flowing through it, it has nothing to cool it or lubricate its seals, and that is how a free fix becomes a replacement part.
6. Something inside is blocked or kinked
If the tank is seated, the vent is clear, the selector is right, the jets are clean and the pump still hums without spraying, look at what sits between them.
- A screen at the tank outlet. Some machines have a small mesh filter where the solution leaves the tank. Undissolved powder and detergent gum collect on it. Rinse it under warm water.
- A kinked supply line. Machines stored with something heavy resting on them can crease an internal line. Where you can see the line, follow it and straighten it.
- A line that has come off. A hard knock can pull a supply line off its fitting. If water is pooling under the machine or inside the base, that is the likely cause.
Opening the housing voids the warranty on a lot of machines, so if you need a screwdriver to get any further, check your warranty status before you do.
7. The trigger, wiring or pump has failed
This is the one real repair on the list, and the signs are reasonably clear.
- No pump sound at all with a full, seated tank, on a machine that normally has one.
- A trigger that feels different, loose, with no click, or one that does not spring back.
- Spray that cuts in and out as you move the handle. The wire to the trigger runs up through the handle, which flexes every time you push and pull, and that is exactly where wires break. If wiggling the handle brings the spray back for a moment, the fault is almost certainly there.
Stop using the machine if you suspect a wiring fault. Pumps and trigger assemblies are replaceable parts on many models, but on most consumer machines a new pump plus labor starts to approach the price of the machine itself. Two habits that cause most of this
Boiling water in the tank. Hot tap water helps a clean. Boiling water is a different matter: most manufacturers warn against it because it can warp the tank, soften seals and damage the pump, and a warped tank is one that no longer seats properly. If you want heat, use the hottest water from the tap and let the machine do the rest.
The wrong thing in the tank. Dish soap and laundry detergent foam heavily and dry into a gum that coats the valve, the screen and the jets. Homemade mixes that do not fully dissolve do the same. Use a solution made for carpet machines at the dose on the bottle, and what to put in the machine goes through which formulations rinse through cleanly.
