You bought the machine. Now you're standing in an aisle looking at eight bottles that all promise the same thing, wondering whether the expensive one is worth it, and whether the stuff under your sink would do instead.
Here's the part nobody selling you a bottle will say: for general cleaning, the solution matters less than you think. For specific stains, it matters more than the machine. And the most common mistake with carpet solution does more damage than picking the wrong brand ever will.
The short version
There are four families of carpet cleaning solution and they do different jobs. Enzymatic breaks down anything organic. Oxidizing breaks the colour bonds in coffee, tea and wine. Surfactant handles general grey soil. Solvent dissolves oil, grease and ink. Match the family to the stain and almost any reputable brand within it will work. Whatever you buy, use a low-foam formula made for extraction machines, and use less than you think, because leftover residue is sticky and pulls dirt back into the carpet faster than before you cleaned.
The four families, and what each one is for
Enzymatic. Contains enzymes that digest protein and organic matter: urine, blood, vomit, milk, food. It works biologically rather than chemically, which means it needs time and moisture to do anything. Thirty seconds achieves nothing. Give it the full dwell time on the label. It's the only correct choice for pet urine, because it destroys the compounds causing the smell rather than masking them.
Oxidizing. Usually hydrogen peroxide or sodium percarbonate. It breaks the chemical bonds that make a stain coloured, which is why it works on tannins that laugh at detergent: coffee, tea, red wine, fruit juice. Powerful, and the same power can lighten some carpet dyes, so test it somewhere hidden first.
Surfactant or detergent. The general-purpose family. Surfactants lift soil off the fiber and hold it in suspension so extraction can carry it away. This is what most bundled solutions are, and for a routine whole-room clean it's the right tool.
Solvent. Dissolves what water cannot: grease and oil, ink, adhesive, tar. Almost always applied as a spot pre-treatment rather than run through the machine.
The one thing about enzymes nobody mentions
Enzymes are proteins, and proteins denature in heat. Pour enzyme cleaner into the tank of a machine that heats its water and you may be deactivating the thing you paid for before it reaches the carpet.
The right sequence is to pre-treat the spot with the enzyme cleaner, let it dwell for the time the label states, and only then run the machine over it. That way the enzymes do their work at a temperature they survive, and the heat and extraction handle removal afterwards. It applies to any heated machine, including ours.

The mistake that ruins more carpet than any product choice
Overdosing. It is close to universal, it feels like being thorough, and it is the reason carpet often looks worse a month after cleaning than it did before.
Detergent that isn't fully rinsed out stays in the pile as a sticky film. That film grabs soil from every shoe that crosses it, so the cleaned area re-soils faster than the carpet around it and develops a grey cast in exactly the spots you worked hardest on. Two habits fix it. Measure the dose rather than pouring by eye, and use slightly less than the label says. Then run a rinse pass with plain water and no solution at all, and keep going until what comes back is clear.
What should never go in a carpet cleaning machine
- Dish soap. The most common substitution and one of the worst. It foams enormously, and foam in an extraction machine can reach the vacuum motor. It also rinses out poorly, so you get the residue problem at full strength.
- Laundry detergent. Same foaming issue, plus optical brighteners designed to sit on fabric and stay there.
- Bleach. Removes colour permanently. There is no version of this that ends well on carpet.

- Any high-foam product. If it isn't labelled low-foam or made for extractors, assume it will foam. Machines recover liquid, not froth.

Heat is the underrated half of this. Hot water does chemical work that detergent would otherwise have to do, so a machine running at 140°F needs a weaker dose than a cold-water one to reach the same result. Less product in means less residue left behind.
The same rule about enzymes applies here as to any heated machine: pre-treat urine and other protein stains separately and let them dwell, then let the machine handle removal. Fiber changes the rules

Nylon with a factory stain-resist finish handles heat and extraction well, but strongly alkaline solutions strip that finish. Once it's gone, that patch re-soils faster than the rest of the room for the rest of the carpet's life.

If there are children or pets in the house
Read the label for what happens after drying rather than what's in the bottle.
