How to Clean Car Carpet and Floor Mats at Home
How to clean car carpet and floor mats at home, with or without a machine: brushing, shampooing, drying, winter salt stains, rubber mats and bad smells.
Car carpet takes more abuse per square foot than anything in your house. It gets wet boots in winter, sand in summer, coffee on the commute, crumbs from the back seat and whatever the dog brings back from the park. And unlike the carpet at home, it sits in a closed metal box that heats up in the sun.
The good news is that you do not need a detailer or a special machine to get it clean. You need a stiff brush, a vacuum, a carpet cleaner that rinses out, some towels, and the patience to let it dry properly. That last part is where most home jobs go wrong.
The short version
Take the floor mats out and clean them separately, then brush the car carpet to loosen embedded dirt and vacuum it slowly, one section at a time. Treat any stains, scrub in a small amount of carpet or upholstery cleaner, and pull the moisture back out with a wet/dry vacuum or clean towels rather than rinsing with lots of water. Dry the car with the doors or windows open until the carpet is completely dry to the touch, because car carpet sits on thick padding that holds water and can grow mold if the car is closed up damp.
What you need
- A vacuum with a crevice tool and a brush attachment. A shop vacuum or a strong handheld is ideal.
- A stiff nylon brush, the kind sold for carpet or upholstery. Avoid wire brushes.
- A carpet or upholstery cleaner that rinses cleanly, either a spray made for car interiors or a carpet shampoo diluted as the label says.
- A spray bottle of warm water for rinsing.
- Microfiber towels, several of them.
- A wet/dry vacuum or portable spot cleaner, if you have one. It makes the job faster and drier, but towels will do.
- White vinegar, if you are dealing with winter salt stains.
- Baking soda, if the car smells.
Two things that make car carpet different
It sits on thick padding. Under most car carpet is a layer of foam or fiber padding that deadens road noise. It soaks up water like a sponge and is slow to dry, and because the car is a closed space, damp padding can start to smell and grow mold. The whole method below is built around using as little water as possible and getting it back out.
There is wiring underneath. Wiring runs under the carpet in most cars, and some have electronic modules under the seats or floor. A light, damp clean is fine. Pouring water into the footwells is not.
The mistake with car carpet is not using the wrong cleaner. It is using too much water and closing the doors before it is dry.
How to clean car carpet, step by step
1. Take the mats out
Pull every floor mat out of the car and put them to one side. They are cleaned separately, and getting them out of the way shows you how much dirt has collected underneath them, which is usually more than you expected.
Slide the front seats all the way forward to reach the carpet behind them, then all the way back when you work in front. Remove anything stored under the seats.
2. Brush, then vacuum slowly
Car carpet is tightly woven and short, and sand and grit wedge down into it. A vacuum alone lifts the loose surface dirt and leaves most of that behind.
Scrub each section with the stiff brush first, working in two directions to stand the fibers up and free the grit. Then vacuum slowly, in overlapping strokes, with the crevice tool along the edges, around the seat rails and under the pedals. Do one footwell at a time: brush, vacuum, move on.
For pet hair that the vacuum will not lift, drag a damp rubber glove or a rubber pet hair brush across the carpet toward you. The hair rolls up into clumps you can pick off or vacuum. How to remove pet hair from carpet has more methods that work just as well in a car.
3. Treat stains before you wash
Deal with individual stains before the general clean, while you can see them clearly. Blot, never rub, and work from the outside of the stain inward so it does not spread.
| Stain | What to use | More detail |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee | Cool water, then a little carpet cleaner, blotted out | Coffee stains |
| Mud | Let it dry completely, break it up, vacuum, then treat what is left | Mud |
| Grease and oil | Absorb with baking soda first, then a degreasing carpet cleaner | Grease |
| Gum | Freeze it with ice in a bag, then chip it off | Gum |
| Winter salt | Equal parts warm water and white vinegar, blotted and rinsed | See the salt section below |
| Vomit or spilled milk | Remove solids, then an enzyme cleaner, left to work | Vomit |
4. Shampoo the carpet, without soaking it
This is the step people search for most as "how to shampoo car carpet," and the key is restraint.
By hand, without a machine:
- Mist one section lightly with your carpet or upholstery cleaner. The surface should be damp, not wet.
- Give it a minute or two to work, as the label directs.
- Scrub with the stiff brush in two directions to work the cleaner into the fibers.
- Press a clean microfiber towel firmly into the carpet to lift the dirty moisture. Fold it to a clean side and repeat until the towel comes up with little dirt on it.
- Mist the section lightly with plain warm water and blot again, to rinse out any cleaner left behind.
Leftover cleaner is sticky, and sticky carpet gets dirty again quickly, so do not skip the rinse. The same thing happens in a house, and it is why choosing a cleaner that rinses out matters.
With a portable spot cleaner or wet/dry vacuum: spray, scrub with the brush, then extract with slow passes. Finish with a pass of plain water and more slow extraction passes than you think you need. A portable spot cleaner suits a car far better than a full-size upright, and upright vs portable spot carpet cleaners compares the two.
5. Dry it properly
This step decides whether the car smells fresh or musty next week.
- Open the doors, or at least the windows, and park in the sun if you can.
- Move air across the carpet with a fan pointed into the footwell, or run the heater with the windows cracked open.
- Press a dry towel into the carpet before you close the car. If it comes up damp, keep drying.
- Do not put the mats back until the carpet under them is fully dry. A mat traps moisture against the carpet.
Mold can grow on damp materials within 24 to 48 hours, which is the reason for the patience. How to dry carpet fast covers the same principles for carpet at home.
How to clean car floor mats
Carpet floor mats
Carpet mats are easier than the car itself, because you can take them out and work on them anywhere.
- Beat them. Hold each mat upside down and smack it against a wall or post to knock out loose sand and grit.
- Brush and vacuum both sides, the same way as the car carpet.
- Shampoo with carpet cleaner and the stiff brush. Because mats have no padding under them, you can rinse more freely than in the car, with a hose on a gentle setting or a bucket of clean water.
- Press out the water with towels, or run a wet/dry vacuum over them.
- Dry them flat or hanging, in the sun if possible, until the backing is completely dry.
Rubber and all-weather mats
- Knock off loose dirt, then rinse with a hose.
- Scrub with warm water, a little mild soap and a stiff brush, getting into the grooves.
- Rinse thoroughly and let them dry completely.
Do not use tire shine or silicone dressing on rubber mats. It makes them slippery, and a foot sliding off a mat near the pedals is a real safety risk.
Putting mats back safely
Fit each mat into its retention hooks or clips if your car has them, and check it cannot slide forward. Never stack a mat on top of another mat. An extra or unsecured mat can ride up under the pedals, which is exactly the situation mat retention systems are designed to prevent.
How to get winter salt stains out of car carpet
Road salt leaves white, crusty tide marks where wet boots dried. A mild vinegar solution helps dissolve the mineral residue the salt leaves behind.
- Vacuum up as much dry salt as you can first.
- Mix equal parts warm water and white vinegar in a spray bottle.
- Mist the stain until damp, let it sit for about five minutes, and scrub gently with the brush.
- Blot with a clean towel until the white marks lift.
- Rinse with plain warm water and blot again, so no vinegar is left in the carpet.
- Dry with the doors or windows open.
Heavy, repeated salt marks can take two or three rounds. The same method works at home, and how to get rock salt stains out of carpet goes further.
Getting a smell out of car carpet
For a general stale smell, sprinkle baking soda over the dry carpet and mats, work it in lightly with the brush, and leave it for several hours or overnight with the car closed. Then vacuum it all out thoroughly. Baking soda absorbs odors. It does not clean stains, and what baking soda and vinegar do and do not do explains why.
For spilled milk, vomit or a pet accident, baking soda will only mask it. The source needs an enzyme cleaner, applied generously enough to reach where the spill went, then extracted and dried.
For a musty, wet smell, find the water before you clean anything. Carpet that keeps getting wet with no spills points to a leak, and the common ones are:
- Door or window seals that let rain in, often showing as damp along one side.
- Blocked sunroof drains, which send water into the footwells.
- A blocked air conditioning drain, which can leak onto the front passenger floor.
- A heater core leak, which leaves the passenger carpet wet and gives off a sweet, syrupy smell. That is engine coolant, so take the car to a mechanic.
If the padding under the carpet is soaked or you can see mold, the carpet may need lifting so the padding can dry or be replaced. How to get mold out of carpet covers when a clean is enough and when it is not.
How often to clean car carpet
Vacuum the carpet and shake out the mats every week or two, which keeps grit from grinding into the fibers. Do a full shampoo two to four times a year, and always at the end of winter to get the salt out before it sets. Spot clean spills as they happen, since a coffee stain that bakes in a hot car is much harder to lift a month later.
Where the Robotin R2 Pro fits
No robot cleans a car, and ours is no exception. The car is a weekend job with a brush and a vacuum.
What a robot can do is take the floors in your house off that weekend list. The Robotin R2 Pro vacuums and mops the hard floors and vacuums the carpet with its Vacuum & Mop Module. Swap in the Carpet Wash & Dry Module and it washes the carpet with 140°F water heated in its base station, extracts it at 115AW and dries the fibers with 110°F warm air on the same pass. The carpet inside gets washed without anyone pushing a machine, and the time you would have spent on it goes to the car instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do you clean car carpet without a machine?
Brush the carpet and vacuum it slowly, then mist one section at a time with a carpet or upholstery cleaner, scrub with a stiff brush, and press clean microfiber towels into it to lift the dirty moisture. Mist with plain water and blot again to rinse, then dry the car with the doors or windows open until the carpet is fully dry.
Can you clean car carpet with baking soda?
Baking soda is good for smells, not stains. Sprinkle it over dry carpet, work it in with a brush, leave it for several hours or overnight, then vacuum it out. For stains, use a carpet or upholstery cleaner, and for milk, vomit or pet accidents, use an enzyme cleaner.
How long does car carpet take to dry?
Usually several hours with the doors open on a warm, dry day, and longer in cold or humid weather. Keep air moving, press a dry towel in to check, and do not close the car or refit the mats until the carpet is dry, since damp padding can start to grow mold within 24 to 48 hours.
How do you clean rubber car floor mats?
Take them out, knock off loose dirt and rinse them with a hose. Scrub with warm water, a little mild soap and a stiff brush, rinse thoroughly and let them dry. Do not use tire shine or silicone dressing, which makes the mats slippery near the pedals.
How do you get salt stains out of car carpet?
Vacuum up the dry salt, then spray the stain with equal parts warm water and white vinegar. Let it sit about five minutes, scrub gently, and blot until the white marks lift. Rinse with plain water, blot again and dry with the doors or windows open. Heavy stains may need two or three rounds.
Why is my car carpet wet and smelly?
If nothing was spilled, water is getting in. Common causes are leaking door or window seals, blocked sunroof drains and a blocked air conditioning drain. A wet passenger floor with a sweet smell can mean a heater core leak, which is engine coolant and needs a mechanic. Fix the leak before cleaning, then dry the carpet and padding fully.
