Robot Vacuum vs Robot Mop: Which One Does Your Home Need?

Three categories, not two, and on carpet the mopping half switches off. How to choose by floor type rather than by label.

Shop for either one and you'll find the categories have quietly merged. Almost everything sold as a robot mop also vacuums, most robot vacuums now offer some kind of mopping, and the labels tell you very little about what the machine will do on your floors.

The useful question is not which category to buy. It's what your floors are made of, and what each type does when it reaches them.

The short version

There are three categories, not two: vacuum-only, mop-only, and the hybrid that makes up most of the market. Mop-only robots are rare, cheap, and drag a damp pad across hard floor. Hybrids vacuum and mop, and on carpet they lift or detach the mop, which means on carpet a hybrid is simply a vacuum. If your home is mostly hard floors, a hybrid is the obvious buy. If it's mostly carpet, the mopping half is irrelevant and you should spend the money on suction instead. And if you want carpet cleaned rather than vacuumed, neither category does that.

The three categories

Robot vacuum. Dry cleaning only. Suction plus a brush roll, no water anywhere. Simplest, cheapest to maintain, and still the best choice for a carpeted home. We covered how they perform on pile in do robot vacuums work on carpet.

Robot mop. Wet cleaning only, usually a damp microfiber pad dragged behind the unit. Genuinely mop-only machines are now uncommon, and they're the weakest option because they push dirt around unless the floor was vacuumed first.

Hybrid vacuum and mop. The mainstream. It vacuums, and it wets a pad or roller for hard floors, usually in the same pass. Everything from mid-range models upward now works this way, and it's what most people mean when they say robot mop.

The practical consequence: you're rarely choosing between a vacuum and a mop. You're choosing how good the mopping half of a hybrid needs to be.

The mopping ladder, cheapest to best

Mopping quality varies far more than vacuum quality, and the difference is mechanical.

Static pad. A damp cloth dragged along. Removes light dust, does nothing to a dried spill. Bottom rung.

Vibrating pad. The pad oscillates rapidly, adding scrubbing action. A real improvement on dried marks.

Rotating pads. Two spinning discs with downward pressure. Much closer to how a person mops, and noticeably better on kitchen floors.

Self-washing roller. A roller continuously fed with clean water and scraped clean as it turns, so it isn't reapplying what it just picked up. The best of the current designs.

The other half of the ladder is the dock. A dock that washes the pad mid-clean and dries it afterwards prevents both dirty-water smearing and the damp-cloth smell that comes from a pad left wet in a base.

The dirty water problem

This is the honest weakness of robot mopping and worth understanding before you spend.

A pad picks up soil, and unless something removes that soil the pad becomes the thing spreading it. On a large floor, a cheap robot mop finishes the last room with a pad carrying everything it collected from the first. It looks wet, which reads as clean, and it isn't.

What fixes it is mechanical, not chemical: pad washing during the run, roller designs that separate clean and dirty water, and a dock that rinses and dries. If a machine has none of those, treat its mopping as a light dust pass rather than actual cleaning.

On carpet, mopping is not a category at all

Every hybrid worth buying detects carpet and gets the wet part away from it. Some lift the pad a few millimetres, some raise the whole chassis, and some detach the pad at the dock before starting. All three amount to the same thing: on carpet, the machine stops mopping and vacuums.

That is correct engineering, because dragging a damp pad across carpet does nothing useful and leaves moisture in the pile. But it means the mopping specification you paid for is inactive across every carpeted square foot of your home. Worth knowing before you buy a top-tier mopping system for a house that is 70% carpet.

Mopping puts a damp cloth on a hard surface. Washing puts water into a soft one and takes it back out. Every robot on the market does the first. The confusion comes from the marketing using both words for the same thing.

Which one should you buy
