Is carpet bad for allergies? The old advice said rip it out. Newer research is mixed, and which allergen you have changes the answer completely.

Someone in the house has been diagnosed with a dust mite allergy, or the asthma is worse this year, and the first advice you get is the same one people have given for thirty years: take up the carpet.

It is not wrong, exactly. It is just much less settled than it sounds, and the research has moved.

One thing to say plainly before anything else. We sell carpet cleaning equipment. A page from us concluding that carpet is fine has an obvious commercial interest attached to it, and a lot of the pro-carpet research in this field is funded or promoted by the carpet industry. Read this with that in mind, weigh the caveats rather than the headline, and if someone in your home has diagnosed asthma or a serious allergy, follow your doctor rather than a flooring blog.

The short version

Carpet is not automatically worse for allergies, and the old blanket advice to replace it with hard flooring has been softened, including by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Several studies have found lower airborne allergen levels over carpet than over hard floors, because carpet holds particles down instead of letting foot traffic stir them back into the air. The enormous caveat is that this only holds if the carpet is properly maintained, and ordinary vacuuming does not remove dust mites and can temporarily increase airborne dust. An uncleaned carpet is a reservoir working against you. Which allergen you are dealing with matters too: for dust mites specifically, humidity is a bigger lever than flooring.

Why the old advice existed

The reasoning was simple and not unreasonable. Carpet holds dust, skin cells, dander and mite allergen. Hard floors do not hold much of anything, and you can wipe them. Remove the reservoir and you remove the problem.

What that reasoning misses is where the allergen ends up. Dust does not disappear from a hard floor. It settles, and then it gets disturbed again by walking, sweeping or a door opening, and while it is airborne it is in your breathing zone. Carpet holds particles in the pile, below the height at which anyone is inhaling.

What the newer research suggests

Several studies have measured allergen concentrations in the air above different flooring types rather than in the flooring itself, and found lower airborne levels over carpet, including cat and dust mite allergen, and including after repeated disturbance.

The mechanism proposed is that carpet behaves like a passive filter. Particles fall into it, the pile holds them, and they stay there until something removes them. Hard flooring has nothing to hold particles, so the same dust cycles between the floor and the air repeatedly.

On the strength of work along these lines, the NHLBI rolled back its earlier recommendation that carpet should be replaced with hard surfaces. That is a meaningful shift, and it is why the confident version of the old advice is no longer safe to give.

Carpet is a reservoir. Whether that helps you or hurts you depends entirely on whether the reservoir gets emptied.

The caveat that decides everything

A filter only helps while it is being changed. Left alone, carpet accumulates, and the same property that keeps allergen out of the air keeps building the supply.

Two uncomfortable specifics sit underneath this, and they are the reason we are not making a stronger claim.

Ordinary vacuuming does not remove dust mites, and it does not meaningfully reduce mite allergen levels on its own. Mites grip the fiber. Allergen is bound into fine particulate that sits at the base of the pile.

Vacuuming can make airborne dust worse in the short term, because a machine without proper filtration passes fine particles straight through the bag and back into the room. If a vacuum has no sealed system or HEPA-grade filtration, it can be redistributing what it picks up. So the fair statement is conditional. Carpet that is deep cleaned on a schedule and vacuumed with a properly filtered machine may hold allergen out of the air better than a hard floor. Carpet that is vacuumed occasionally with an unfiltered machine is doing the opposite.

It depends which allergen you have

Dust mites are the case where the flooring argument matters least. Mites need humidity to survive, and below roughly 50 percent relative humidity they struggle regardless of what is on your floor. Controlling humidity does more than replacing flooring does.

There is a narrow band to aim for, and we have written about both edges of it. Below 40 percent you get static problems, and above about 60 percent you invite mold under the carpet. Forty to fifty percent is the working window, and it happens to be the range that suppresses mites.

When hard flooring is the better answer

Being straight about this, because a carpet-cleaning company saying carpet always wins would not be worth reading.

  • Severe diagnosed allergy or asthma, where a specialist has recommended removal. Follow the clinician.
  • The bedroom of the affected person, which is where they spend eight hours a night breathing close to the floor. If you change one room, change that one.
  • Persistently humid homes, where mite populations stay high whatever you do to the carpet.
  • Below-grade rooms, where damp is a standing risk. See cleaning carpet in a basement.
  • Where nobody will maintain it. This is the honest one. If deep cleaning is not going to happen on a schedule, the conditional benefit does not apply, and hard flooring is more forgiving of neglect.

If you are keeping the carpet

  1. Control humidity first. A hygrometer and a dehumidifier do more for a mite allergy than a flooring change.
  2. Vacuum with a sealed, properly filtered machine, slowly, in overlapping passes, two or three times a week in the rooms that matter. Speed is what most people get wrong.
  3. Deep clean on a schedule rather than when the carpet looks bad, since allergen accumulates long before it is visible. How often to deep clean sets out intervals by household.
  4. Dry it fast every time. A carpet left damp trades a mite problem for a mold one.
  5. Shoes off at the door, which cuts pollen and outdoor particulate at the source.
  6. Choose low, dense pile if you are replacing anyway. Less depth for allergen to settle into and vacuuming reaches further, as covered in which carpet is easiest to clean.

Where a robot helps, and where it does not

The conditional in this article is a frequency problem. Carpet holds allergen out of the air only while it is being emptied, and the schedule that requires is one most people do not keep. That is the gap a machine can close, and it is the only claim we will make here.

What humidity level stops dust mites?

Below about 50 percent relative humidity mites struggle to survive. Keep the range between 40 and 50 percent: below 40 you get static problems, and above 60 you risk mold and damp, which brings its own allergen.

Should I replace my carpet if I have allergies?

Not as a first step. Control humidity, improve vacuuming and deep cleaning frequency, and take shoes off at the door before spending money on flooring. If you do replace, prioritize the bedroom of the person affected, since that is where they breathe closest to the floor for longest.

What kind of carpet is best for allergy sufferers?

Low, dense pile in a synthetic fiber. There is less depth for allergen to settle into and a vacuum can reach closer to the backing. Avoid long shag, which is the hardest of all to get allergen out of.
