Why Are There Black Lines on My Carpet Edges?
Dark lines along the skirting boards and under doors are filtration soiling, not dirt walked in. What causes it, why vacuuming never touches it, and how to stop it returning.
There is a dark grey line running along the bottom of the wall, tight against the skirting board. Maybe another one under a closed door, or along the edge of every stair tread. It looks like a shadow until you get closer, and it does not come out.
You have probably vacuumed it a dozen times. You may have scrubbed it and watched it not change. That is because it is not dirt that got walked in, and it is not a stain in the ordinary sense. It has a specific name and a specific cause, and both are worth knowing before you spend another Saturday on it.
The short version
Those lines are filtration soiling. Your carpet is acting as an air filter, and the very fine particles floating in your indoor air are being caught in the pile wherever air is forced through the carpet edge. That happens along walls, under doors and at stair nosings because those are the places where air escapes through gaps under the carpet. The particles are far too small and too deeply bound for a vacuum to lift, which is why nothing you have tried has worked. Removal takes a specialist solvent and heat, and it is not always complete. The real fix is closing the gaps and cleaning up the air.
What filtration soiling actually is
Think of the carpet edge as the filter on a vacuum cleaner. Air is moving through your house all the time, pushed by heating and cooling, by doors opening, by the pressure difference between rooms. Where that air can pass through carpet rather than around it, the carpet does what any filter does. It lets the air through and keeps the solid particles.
The particles are the sort you never see individually: soot from candles, unburnt carbon from cooking, smoke residues, vehicle exhaust drawn in from outside, fine dust. They are measured in fractions of a micron, and they lodge against the base of the fibres and stay there. Over months, a line appears. Over years, it goes almost black.
Why it forms in those exact places
Along walls and skirting boards
In most houses there is a small gap where the subfloor meets the wall plate, hidden under the carpet edge. It is a normal part of construction, and air moves through it constantly. The carpet lies right over the top, so every bit of that air is filtered through the pile at the edge. The line follows the wall because the gap follows the wall.
Under doors
A closed door with carpet beneath it creates a narrow gap, and air is squeezed through it at speed. The faster the air, the more particles it carries and deposits. This is why the line under a door is often darker and sharper than the ones along the walls, and why it is worst on doors that stay shut.
On stairs
Stairs are worse than anywhere else in the house. Warm air rises through the stairwell continuously, and the nosing of each tread is an edge that air passes over and through. Many people notice the dark stripe on the front edge of every step and assume it is wear from feet. What is producing the particles
- Candles, and by a wide margin. Paraffin candles, and scented ones in particular, produce fine soot that stays airborne for hours. A room where candles burn regularly will show filtration lines faster than any other.
- Cooking, especially frying and anything at high heat without extraction running.
- Fireplaces and wood burners, including small amounts of backdraught that never look like smoke.
- Smoking indoors.
- Poor or overdue HVAC filtration, which lets particles recirculate rather than removing them.
- Outdoor air in homes near busy roads, especially where the house runs at negative pressure and pulls air in through gaps.

None of these are things most people connect to a mark on the floor, which is why filtration soiling is so often misdiagnosed as dirt or wear.
Why vacuuming never touches it
A vacuum removes particles sitting loose in the pile. Filtration soiling is neither loose nor near the surface. The particles are ultrafine, they have been pressed against the base of the fibres by moving air, and many carry a static charge that holds them to the fibre. Suction across the top of the carpet does not reach them and cannot dislodge them.
It is the same reason scrubbing tends to fail. You are working at the tips of the fibres while the soil is at the bottom, and rubbing often just spreads what little you lift. This is also why vacuuming before a deep clean helps with ordinary soil but changes nothing at the edges.

Can it be removed?
Sometimes, partially, and it is genuinely difficult. This is the honest answer rather than the encouraging one.
Successful removal usually needs all of the following together: a solvent or degreaser formulated for filtration soiling, applied with dwell time; heat, because the particles are often bound in an oily film from cooking or candle wax; mechanical agitation right down at the base of the pile; and hot water extraction to flush everything out. Domestic machines and supermarket sprays rarely combine those four things.
Even done properly, older filtration lines often lighten rather than disappear. If it has been building for five years, expect improvement rather than erasure, and be sceptical of anyone promising otherwise.

How to stop it coming back
Removal without prevention buys you a year at most. The line reappears because the cause is still there.
- Seal the gap. The permanent fix. Lift the carpet edge and caulk the joint where the subfloor meets the wall plate, then re-lay it. A fitter can do it, and once the air stops passing through the edge the soiling stops accumulating.
- Burn fewer candles, or move to soy or beeswax and keep wicks trimmed short. Long wicks and paraffin are what produce the soot.
- Run the extractor while cooking, every time, and for a few minutes afterwards.
- Change HVAC filters on schedule, and use a higher-rated filter if your system tolerates it. Recirculating fine particles is what feeds the whole process.
- Leave interior doors open where you can. It reduces the pressure differences that force air through gaps.
- Ventilate. Fresh air dilutes the particle load, and the fewer particles in the air, the fewer end up in the carpet.
